The Endocannabinoid System: How CBD Oil Works in Our Bodies
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) can be found in almost every part of our body- including the nervous and immune systems. A healthy endocannabinoid system enables homeostasis (it means the ECS balances our cells and organs).
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) regulates physical and emotional processes like pain and mood to maintain this balance.
CBD oil (referred to as CBD tincture or sublingual) is believed to interact with the human endocannabinoid system, potentially promoting balance. Further research is needed to understand its role as a daily supplement fully.
In other words, it provides something extra to help enable homeostasis in your body. Of course, more research is needed to provide evidence for its potential use as a daily supplement.
Okay – so let’s get to CBD oil (CBD tincture/sublingual) and how to use it!
Getting Started with Hemp CBD Oil Tincture Dosing
First, what’s the difference between 250mg, 500mg, or 1000mg CBD oil?
CBD is measured in milligrams (mg) and refers to the concentration of the CBD oil in the bottle.
Most bottles are 1 ounce, which means they can hold 32mL of CBD. If the bottle is 1 ounce, a dropper full of CBD oil is considered one whole serving.
What does this mean?
Well, if you purchase a 1000mg bottle of CBD oil in a 32 mL bottle, then a full dropper is 32mg of CBD. If you take one full dropper daily, the bottle will last 32 days.
If you purchase a 500mg bottle of CBD oil in a 32mL bottle, then a full is 16mg of CBD. If you take one full dropper daily, the bottle will last 32 days.
How we calculated the CBD dosage: 500mg / 32mL = 16mg
(500mg divided by 32mL equals 16mg)
Thus, if you purchase a 250mg bottle of CBD oil in a 32 mL bottle, then a full dropper of CBD oil is 8mg of CBD.
If you take one full dropper daily, the bottle will last 32 days.
Usually, a 1000mg bottle is pricier than a 500mg bottle. And that’s more expensive than 250mg.
However, a 1000mg bottle is more cost-effective in the long run if you plan to implement CBD into your daily lifestyle.
We always suggest that when starting with CBD oil, you start with a low dosage and then increase as needed. We also encourage daily CBD oil usage for three to four weeks to see how CBD interacts with your body and feel the benefits.
Suggested Directions for Taking Hemp CBD Oil:

- Shake the bottle
- When you open your bottle, you will notice there is a dropper
- Squeeze the dropper to fill it with oil
- You will then place the CBD oil dosage under your tongue (this is why it is called “sublingual”). The membrane under your tongue is thin. So, it allows the CBD oil to penetrate quickly and enter the bloodstream.
- Once you have placed the CBD oil under your tongue, hold it for 60 seconds
- Swallow the remainder of the CBD oil
Some directions suggest dosage based on drops. For example, the directions on the bottle may read, “Place one to three drops under your tongue.”
However, I need help with this method. You can’t see how many drops you’re placing under your tongue--unless you are standing in front of a mirror.
Even then… I can’t see! So, I suggest dosing based on your dropper.
For example, I usually take ¼ dropper of 1000mg, which is 8mg. If you are new to CBD and using a 1000mg CBD oil, I suggest starting with half a ¼ dropper for 4mg.
Experiment to Determine Your Optimal Daily CBD Dose
While a bottle may state that one full dropper is a serving size, this is not true for each person. The amount of CBD oil you will use will depend on a wide range of factors, including:
- body type
- weight
- current health status
- genetics
- desired level of relief you are searching for.
It is recommended to start with a low CBD oil dosage and adjust gradually. Individual responses vary; consulting with a healthcare professional can help determine your optimal level.
For me, I did this by experimenting at bedtime.
I started low and increased my dosage until I could comfortably sleep through the night. I wanted rest without my pain and overactive mind waking me up.
Individual experiences may vary, but some users report waking up without feeling dizzy or tired. It's essential to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
