How to Use CBD Oil and Find Your Optimum Daily Dosage

You heard about CBD, you were curious to try it, you came to our site – MyPainCenter.com, decided on a CBD oil and now you’re unsure of the next step - how to use CBD oil and your optimum daily dosage.

No worries – we got you! The hard step is over – you purchased a safe and reliable CBD oil.

How to use CBD oil

Before we share with you the best way to use CBD oil, let’s quickly recap what CBD does and how it interacts with your body.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) can be found in almost every part of our body- including the nervous system and the immune system. A healthy endocannabinoid system enables homeostasis or in other words it means the ECS balances our cells and organs. To maintain this balance, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) regulates physical and emotional processes like pain and mood.

CBD oil (sometimes called CBD tincture or sublingual) interacts with the human endocannabinoid system to promote balance among our body’s most extensive regulatory system. In other words, it provides a little something extra to help enable homeostasis in your body.  Of course, more research is needed to provide evidence for its potential use as a daily supplement.

Okay – so let’s get to CBD oil aka CBD tincture aka CBD sublingual and how to use it!

First, what’s the difference between a 250mg or 500mg or 1000mg CBD oil?  Great question!

CBD is measured in milligrams (mg) and refers to the concentration of the CBD oil in the bottle.  Most bottles are 1 ounce, which means it can hold 32mL of CBD.  If the bottle is 1 ounce, then a dropper full of CBD oil is considered 1 full serving (more on this later).

What does this mean?

Well, if you purchase a 1000mg bottle of CBD oil in a 32mL bottle, then a full dropper is 32mg of CBD.  If you take 1 full dropper a day, then the bottle will last you 32 days.

If you purchase a 500mg bottle of CBD oil in a 32mL bottle, then a full is 16mg of CBD.  If you take 1 full dropper a day, then the bottle will last you 32 days.

Here’s the math on how I came to these numbers:  500mg divided by 32mL equals 16mg.

Thus, if you purchase a 250mg bottle of CBD oil in a 32mL bottle, then a full dropper of CBD oil is 8mg of CBD.  If you take 1 full dropper a day, then the bottle will last you 32 days.

This all said, usually a 1000mg bottle is pricier than a 500mg which is pricier than a 250mg.  However, a 1000mg bottle is more cost effective in the long-run if you plan to implement CBD in to your daily lifestyle.

We always suggest that when starting with CBD oil you start with a low dosage and then increase as needed.  We also encourage daily usage of CBD oil for three to four weeks to see how CBD interacts with your body and feel the benefits.

Here’s how to use your CBD oil:

  • Shake the bottle
  • When you open your bottle, you will notice there is a dropper
  • Squeeze the dropper to fill it with oil
  • You will then place the desired dosage* of CBD oil under your tongue. This is why it is called sublingual CBD oil.  The membrane under your tongue is thin and allows the CBD oil to penetrate quickly and enter the blood stream
  • Once you have placed the CBD oil under your tongue, hold it for 60 seconds before swallowing the remainder of the CBD oil

*Some directions will suggest dosage based on drops.  For example, the directions on the bottle may read, “place one to three drops under your tongue.”  However, I find this method difficult, as you cannot really see how many drops you are placing under your tongue unless you are standing in front of a mirror. Even then, I can’t see! I suggest dosing based on your dropper.  For example, I measure my CBD by the dropper.  I usually take ¼ dropper of 1000mg which is 8mg.  If you are new to CBD, and using a 1000mg CBD oil, I would suggest starting with half of a ¼ dropper which is 4mg of CBD oil.

How to Determine Your Optimal Daily Dose of CBD?

Honestly, there is no one answer to this question.  While a bottle may state that one full dropper is a serving size, this is not true for each person.  The amount of CBD oil you will use will depend on a wide range of factors including your body type, weight, your current health status, genetics, and what desired level of relief you are searching for.

This is why we recommend that you start with a low dosage of CBD oil and continue to increase this dosage until you feel you have reached your optimum level.

For me, personally, I did this by experimenting at bedtime.  I started low and increased my dosage until I could comfortably sleep through the night without my pain and anxiety waking me up and when I wake up in the morning without feeling groggy or tired, as I do when I take Tramadol or Advil PM.
